, OK? Ella Langley’s listless “Choosin’ Texas” has been sittin’
pretty at number one for a whopping 16 weeks. She won! But will I
really be hummin’ this ditty 20 years from now? (Even writing
about country music brings out my Southern accent.) It’s missing
the fire of a classic breakup anthem like “Before He Cheats” or
the sunniness of the recent summer hit “I Had Some Help.” Those
songs are rousing, exceedingly easy to sing along to,
irresistible even to non-fans if they’re at the bar late enough.

splintering of monoculture and rise of streaming and social
platforms and hyper-specific algorithms. But that doesn’t seem to
explain why Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande and Drake haven’t
dethroned Langley for long.  Maybe it’s an August thing. Perhaps
the American people don’t have room for a new song in our heads,
preoccupied by disquieting, sanity-challenging current events.
Have Americans, much like Langley in “Choosin’ Texas,” given up
and crowned it the song of the summer because we’re too hot and
exhausted to deliberate this made-up category anymore? I went
digging for answers in old Billboard charts, surveying the #1
songs in the first week of August, from 2006 all the way back to
the pop chart’s inception in 1936. (I’m skipping 2016 because I
choose not to believe that that was 10 years ago.) What I found
was absolutely no pattern. Tumultuous world events did not evenly
produce good or bad music. Some of these are stinkers! Sometimes
the most memorable song of summer doesn’t go #1. And every so

“listenable.” It’s a snoozy ballad about defending a damsel, ew.

life. YES, this silly little game is on a screen but it’s NOT on
my phone and has NO internet connection, so let’s say I’m
unplugging. But I love it because in Pokopia, I am the mayor and
a beloved celebrity and Nikola Tesla, bringing electricity to the
various lands I occupy. I can move mountains and control the flow
of oceans, but mostly I just buy furniture and make smoothies for
my Poké-neighbors. Oh, to manipulate the world to my liking, to
improve the lives of my neighbors who universally adore me. I
play “Pokopia” because it’s a safe dalliance with megalomania:
