WorldWE In Action
Last month, WorldWE Policy Director Becca Zipkin joined Sanctuary for Families Director of Policy, Alexi Ashe Meyers, Melanie Thompson, and bill sponsors Senator Myrie and Assemblywoman Paulin in Albany to advocate for NY S8609/ A9214, The Victim Protection and Sex Buyer Accountability Act. Under current NY State law, adults who purchase a 15-, 16-, or 17-year-old child for sex do not face felony charges, unlike cases involving children under 15. This bill would align New York with federal law and with states across the country by affirming that any person under 18 who is bought for commercial sex is, by definition, a trafficking victim.

Deadline Extended: DOJ Compensation Process for Victims Trafficked Through Backpage.com
------------------------------------------------------------
In December 2024, the Department of Justice forfeited over $200 million in assets traceable to Backpage’s profits. These funds are now available to compensate victims for eligible losses. Victims whose sex trafficking was facilitated through advertisements posted on Backpage.com between Jan. 1, 2004, and April 6, 2018, and who incurred financial losses related to their trafficking may be eligible for remission.
