rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">NOT because we (or my parents) were afraid anything would HAPPEN to us, but simply because Mom and Dad timed dinner for WHEN the street lights came 1.375em;">It was an idyllic age, for me, and my friends. </h3><p style="margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">We knew nothing at that point, about racial rights, women’s rights, and all the political stuff. THAT came later, during high school.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">YES, I lived in a nice, middle-class neighborhood, with VERY few POC’s. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">I didn’t KNOW the difference. Later in high school, I actually MET a few POC’s in my high school, and to be honest, I asked them a LOT of questions. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">But they became good friends, and were accepted at our dinner table, despite my father’s personal family history of racism… </p><p style="margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">NOW, kids are “socially” more intelligent than I was. I don’t apologize for that, it wasn’t MY fault, OR my family’s. The America before, those video clips are EXACTLY how I grew up.
I OFTEN would stay out from sunrise to sunset. “When the street lights come on, get in the house”.
NOT because we (or my parents) were afraid anything would HAPPEN to us, but simply because Mom and Dad timed dinner for WHEN the street lights came on.
It was an idyllic age, for me, and my friends.
We knew nothing at that point, about racial rights, women’s rights, and all the political stuff. THAT came later, during high school.
YES, I lived in a nice, middle-class neighborhood, with VERY few POC’s.
I didn’t KNOW the difference. Later in high school, I actually MET a few POC’s in my high school, and to be honest, I asked them a LOT of questions.
But they became good friends, and were accepted at our dinner table, despite my father’s personal family history of racism…
NOW, kids are “socially” more intelligent than I was. I don’t apologize for that, it wasn’t MY fault, OR my family’s. But today, the kids are thrust into a society that FORCES issues onto them that they shouldn’t HAVE to acknowledge OR know, until much later in years.
Some people have told me, when I said this, that the kids have the RIGHT to know what the differences and difficulties are.
But DO THEY??
WHY can we NOT let them be children first, and members of society second? Why do THEY have to be indoctrinated from ANY side, that they have to “think this way or that way”, instead of simply meeting new people, and deciding for themselves that those people are good OR bad, dependent on how the CHILDREN see them, not how their PARENTS, or even their FRIENDS, see them.
I lament the loss of innocence that came with race wars, gender wars, and ALL that, that shouldn’t even be APPLIED to the children, but that grownups CONSTANTLY bring them into.
Bring Back My World.
