## **How to prompt coding agents like a pro (in 2026)**

**Old book, new tricks.** Agents can build full-stack apps in minutes, but subtle bugs in the codebase can grind your build to a halt. Senior dev Matt Pocock kept hitting this exact hurdle, and his workaround to this wasn't a shiny new model or a clever prompt hack. But, it came straight from a classic programming book published back in 1999. He explained the idea on a [podcast](https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/ai-skills-with-matt-pocock).
**Here's the copy-ready version for you:**
* Ask the agent to build a "tracer bullet," also known as a "golden path." That means creating one thin, working route from input to output before filling in the rest.
* Use the name of the pattern. "Build a tracer bullet" works better than a paragraph describing it because the model already knows what the term means.
* If the output starts getting worse, do not just add more instructions. Look for the precise technical term that captures what you want.
* Search the classics for more of these "leading words." Pocock found "tracer bullet" in [The Pragmatic Programmer](https://www.amazon.com/Pragmatic-Programmer-journey-mastery-Anniversary/dp/0135957052) book, and he now reads old programming books looking for more such terms.
**The magic word.** These terms are basically prompt shortcuts. Say "use a tracer bullet," and the agent can pull up an entire pattern it already understands. That is much clearer than explaining every step yourself.
**The readers win.** Turns out, reading the classics still matters. If you know your fundamentals, you already have a library of powerful prompts that someone using plain English might never think to try. And as agents write more of the code, that advantage only gets bigger.

## **How to keep using Claude Code after hitting rate limits**
Hitting the five-hour session limit mid-task kills momentum. A dev [shared](https://archive.codenewsletter.ai/2103224547897983468) a command Anthropic shipped quietly around v2.1.241 without ever adding it to the changelog.
* **Step 1:** Run it after you hit your session limit:

* **Step 2:** Claude Code keeps working at reduced priority. Requests only process when spare capacity exists, so responses may pause during peak hours.
* **Step 3:** Run the same command again to switch back to normal mode.
One catch: this still draws from your weekly limit, so use it to finish the task in front of you, not to start new ones. Run `/usage` to check where you stand before leaning on it.
