A screening of the award-winning documentary “Outsider (https://contact.mainepublic.org/s/3933801/87SmbOQ9),” co-presented by Maine Public, will be presented at the Strand Theatre (https://contact.mainepublic.org/s/3942522/4xSejqoY) on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 5:30pm. The 40-minute film addresses both the tragedy and redemption that can result from mental illness. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Keith Shortall, Maine Public’s Senior Editor, and a reception.

At the reception, guests will have the opportunity to see and purchase Maury Ornest’s art and talk with the panelists. All proceeds from the sale of the art will be split between the Strand Theatre and Maine Public.

“Outsider” follows the personal, complex story of artist Maury Ornest, whose life encompassed baseball, schizoaffective disorder, and art. After his death at age 58, his sister Laura discovered more than 1,400 paintings in every room of his home and secret storage units, a discovery that set her on an unexpected journey. The film presents a rarely seen, unvarnished view of a family’s journey with mental illness and captures the surprising ways they found connection.

Camden International Film Festival

The Camden International Film Festival is celebrating its 21st edition this month and Maine Public is pleased to again be a Media Sponsor! CIFF will feature a slate of boundary-pushing documentary films and filmmakers from across the globe. The festival will take place in person from September 11-14 at various venues throughout Camden and Rockland.

This is one of the preeminent film festivals in Maine and beyond and it really is a special experience to attend one of their screenings surrounded by other film lovers. 2025 Common Ground Country Fair

Maine Public is a Media Sponsor of this year’s Common Ground Country Fair, and we can’t wait to get to Unity and meet you! The fair will be held at the Common Ground Education Center on September 19, 20, and 21. The fairgrounds are open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Emily loves the French Romantics, twentieth-century American composers, and has a deep love for Amy Beach, Florence Price, and Caroline Shaw. She is passionate about making classical music accessible and inviting to listeners through story and sound. She holds an M.F.A. in Sound Design from the Yale School of Drama and a B.A. in Music with a Concentration in Multiple-Woodwind Performance from Smith College.
